Collectors value 19th century engravings as an accomplished folk art with a distinctive, period look and feel. Bold, clear line work is the special strength of the medium. Lighting contrasts and variations in the texture give a sense of interior space ~ the illusion of entering another place in time. But there is more to it than esthetics. Engravings are collected because they are about something, authentic pieces of our history. A scene as it appears in an engraving published more than a century ago is different than a Kodak color print shot today. The glossy color print pulls the past into the present. Engravings work the other way, drawing us back in time, to meet the past on its own terms ~ to see things as people living back then pictured them. If we come to see historic sites strictly in terms of our place in time ~ with our perceptual bias, interests and print technology ~ we miss what is different at the sites. The differences are what is important here. The differences are what makes the sites worth preserving and visiting. If we lose the power to imagine life as it has existed in other times, these possibilities are lost upon us. Without memory, we are prisoners of the present moment. Freedom without awareness of possibilities, without choice, becomes an empty word.
